About

Tucked into a sunlit suite on North Pinckney Street in the heart of downtown Madison, WESLI (Wisconsin ESL Institute) has been quietly running one of the Midwest's most personable English programs since 1981. Founded by Jeff and Gail Dreyfus after their teaching years in Indonesia and later stewarded by former student Carlos Osorio, the school has grown into a compact operation serving learners from more than 190 countries without losing the intimacy of its origins. Faculty tenure often stretches beyond fifteen years, and the administrative team is drawn almost entirely from the classroom, giving the place the feel of a family-run academy rather than a corporate language mill.

The curriculum climbs through seven proficiency levels in eight-week increments and branches into Academic English, Business English, General English, IELTS/TOEFL/GRE prep, a Wisconsin Academic Experience pathway tied to UW-Madison's VISP, plus junior camps and a teacher-training track. The idiosyncratic "English Plus" option, which pairs core coursework with electives ranging from yoga and photography to a class simply called "Beer," is a small but telling reminder that WESLI thinks language learning belongs out in the city, not just in a textbook.

Students come for university preparation, professional advancement, or an immersive Madison summer, and most stay in homestays or vetted private residences arranged by the school. It is not the flashiest option in American ESL, but for learners who want small classes, careful placement, and a walkable Midwestern capital as their classroom, WESLI is a reliable and unusually humane choice.

Not as I expected! Reptead subjects for all levels. Teachers are not fare with grading their students. Unpleasant experience. waste of time. Not recommended.

I don't recommend Wesli because its methodology is for children and teenagers, not for adults. Progress is slow and teachers even repeat the same topics. Its website isn't clear about costs and times. In addition, it offers Business English and it's a lie, there is only one class that is called that and it's not strictly business, there isn't a teacher with experience in Management or Administration of a company that teaches you to read financial statements, to make a budget or a strategic plan. The institute is very small, it only has 4 classrooms and 2 rooms for other activities. The dining room is very small, it only has 5 chairs and people eat their lunch standing up. Really disappointed in the benefits received at such a high cost. The institute is so small that it doesn't have the capacity to substitute a teacher when he's sick, he must teach online and for me it's unacceptable to come from so far away and make a high investment to receive an online class. But when a student gets sick he can't take a virtual class. The common areas are very small, so much so that the students have lunch in the library and the dining room looks more like a recreational area, there is a ping pong table and the students keep playing and making noise all day. It's better to pay month by month and not everything in advance.

An outstanding institution of Madison WI. Every staffs and teachers are very friendly and so nice. If you are interested in studying, no doubt to choose here. Acceptable tuition price as well, not sure the dorm condition though. Students from all around the world and suitable classes would be fit to most of them.

Coming to the United States, I couldn't imagine living such a beautiful experience and full of surprises at WESLI, teachers are really nice and we find friends who come from all over the world, we share different cultural and it's interesting. But we just have to change teaching methods, it will allow students to have a lot of things but in a short time!
