ELS Language Centers, University of St. Thomas
University-embedded English language center in downtown Minneapolis offering intensive English and a direct academic pathway into 600+ partner U.S. colleges.
About
Tucked into Terrence Murphy Hall on the University of St. Thomas's downtown Minneapolis campus, ELS St. Paul-Minneapolis brings the venerable ELS Language Centers formula — small classes, structured level progression, and an academic pathway to hundreds of partner U.S. universities — into a compact urban campus that straddles the Twin Cities. Students share fitness facilities, libraries, computer labs, and student life with degree-seeking Tommies, and eligible learners can audit university courses at Level 110 or above or move into concurrent enrollment.
The curriculum spans Intensive and Semi-Intensive English, Super-Intensive English, English for Executives, IELTS preparation (the site is an official IELTS test center), and the lighter American Explorer track. Classes average 12 to 15 students with an 18-student ceiling, and the center pairs learners with University of St. Thomas undergraduates through the American Conversation Partnerships program — a signature ELS touch that puts real, unscripted English within arm's reach after class.
As part of the ELS network (founded 1961, ACCET-accredited, with more than 1.2 million alumni from 143 countries), completion of Level 109 or 112 satisfies English-language admission requirements at 600+ partner U.S. colleges and universities, making this a solid, low-drama choice for internationally-minded students eyeing a Midwestern degree.

ELS Language School has been essential to my journey as both an English learner and an immigrant in the United States. The teachers are excellent, caring, and engaged. There are students from all over the world, which not only leads to great friendships but is also amazing for cultural exchange. Additionally, Jonathon and Margaret have been helping me immensely with my next academic and educational steps by helping me to connect with universities. Highly recommended!
Studying at ELS was an enriching experience. I got to know several cultures, and besides greatly improving my English, I also learned other languages. I met people from all over the world and made lifelong friendships!
My experience at ELS for 4 months was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had. I learned a lot during this time, not only in terms of language but also personally. The teachers were very kind, supportive, and always willing to help, and the administration was great as well.
Studying at ELS St. Paul has been the most incredible experience of my life. Stepping out of my comfort zone to explore a new country and improve my English skills was the best decision I've ever made. However, this experience wouldn't have been possible without the team working at ELS St. Paul (teachers and administrative staff) as absolutely everyone was very kind and professional. At this school, I had the opportunity to make new friends from different countries, learn about their cultures and traditions, and interact with them. Not to mention, it was a great opportunity to teach others about my own country and culture. There was always an atmosphere of friendship. The school is equipped with everything necessary to make the classes interactive and fun. Additionally, every month there are new and exciting activities that help reinforce language skills and make you feel comfortable and confident speaking English. The saddest part is when you have to say goodbye to your friends who return to their countries, but there is always the possibility to stay in touch, and why not? One day reunite in their country or yours. In summary, I totally recommend the experience of studying at ELS St. Paul for the quality of teaching, the environment, and the experiences you can have! Recommendation: Make friends who don't speak your language, this way you can strengthen your language and social skills! And if you are shy, don't worry! We Latin Americans can help you!
